ART & Sense of Place

A painting often comes from writing down my thoughts on a topic, sometimes this evolves into a series of paintings

Here are my thoughts from my journal as I reflected on different landscapes and places:

When exploring a "sense of place",  painting is a powerful tool to convey a deep connection to a local scene or favourite place. I often feel the energy of a place.  There is an interconnectedness of things and I aim to put my feelings on the canvas. Hence this is called painting in the style of Expressionism. .

While manipulating the visual elements of art, and placing them into a canvas I often feel I’m in ‘the zone’ or transported to another time and space.

HOW ART CHANGES OVER TIME

The journey of art over time has seen an interesting evolution, characterized by shifts from realism to abstraction and back to realism again. Realism, with its meticulous attention to detail and accurate representation of the physical world, dominated artistic expression for centuries.

However, as the 19th century progressed, artists began to challenge the confines of realism. The emergence of Impressionism marked a significant departure from strict representation, emphasizing the artist's subjective interpretation of light, colour, and atmosphere. This movement laid the foundation for further experimentation, leading to the rise of abstract art in the 20th century.

Abstract art discarded the need for recognizable subject matter, instead prioritizing the exploration of form, colour, and texture. Artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian sought to express emotions, ideas, and spiritual concepts through non-representational compositions. Abstract art offered a departure from reality, encouraging viewers to engage with the artwork on a deeper, more visceral level.

However, as the 20th century progressed, there was a gradual return to realism in various forms. Artists like Andrew Wyeth and Chuck Close reintroduced meticulous attention to detail and a focus on capturing the human form or everyday objects with precision. This resurgence of realism in contemporary art showcased a renewed appreciation for technical skill and the exploration of human experiences in a tangible way.

The ebb and flow between realism and abstraction reflect the dynamic nature of artistic expression. Artists continually push boundaries, experimenting with different styles and techniques to convey their ideas and emotions. The cyclical journey from realism to abstraction and back to realism again underscores the versatility of art and its ability to adapt, challenge, and reflect the ever-changing world we inhabit.

HOME & INSPIRATION

As an artist, I have always been looking for new sources of inspiration, and I found exactly what I was looking for when I moved to the Gold Coast. Nestled along the east coast of Australia, the Gold Coast is a place of breathtaking natural beauty and endless creative possibilities. From the sandy beaches and sparkling ocean to the lush rainforests and cascading waterfalls, the Gold Coast is a place that truly speaks to the soul.

ART & BELONGING

Art has the remarkable ability to foster a sense of belonging, both individually and collectively. Through various artistic expressions, individuals find solace, validation, and a connection to their innermost selves. Art provides a platform for self-expression, enabling individuals to explore their identities, emotions, and experiences. In this process, people often discover a sense of belonging, finding comfort and understanding in their unique perspectives.

Moreover, art also cultivates a sense of belonging in communities and societies. This serves as universal language that transcends cultural, linguistic, and social barriers, bringing people together. Artistic creations can reflect shared values, aspirations, and narratives, fostering a sense of unity and common purpose. Whether it be visual arts, music, dance, or literature, art has the power to create a shared space where individuals can feel understood, connected, and part of something greater than themselves.

In a world that often feels fragmented and divided, art serves as a unifying force, reminding us of our shared humanity and bridging the gaps between diverse individuals and communities. It allows us to recognise and celebrate our differences while finding common ground. Art and Belonging are often intertwined, offering us a sense of home and acceptance, both within ourselves and among others.

MY OWN ART JOURNEY

Over the years, my art has transformed, evolving from realism to abstraction and back to realism.

Initially, I was drawn to capturing the world around me with precise detail, seeking to depict reality faithfully. However, as I delved deeper into my artistic journey, I needed to break free from the constraints of strict representation. Inspired by the expressive freedom of abstract art, I began exploring new techniques and concepts, experimenting with colour, texture, and form. I loved the freedom of this work and still do.

Yet, as time passed, I found myself gravitating once again towards a more grounded approach. I rediscovered the power of realism, using it as a vehicle to convey the intricacies of human experiences. This journey of artistic exploration and rediscovery has allowed me to embrace the versatility of art, continually evolving and adapting to express my innermost thoughts and emotions.

I now believe my journey of isolating between realism and abstraction will continue through my life and artwork.

INSPIRED BY WATER

The artist finds inspiration in the fluidity and vastness of water and the ocean. The rhythmic ebb and flow, the play of light on the surface, and the depth of the aquatic world captivate the imagination. The artist attempts to translate the beauty and power of these elements onto canvas, invoking a sense of serenity, awe, and connection to the natural world.

Something about vast horizons... they get me everytime.

DOGS IN ART HISTORY

Throughout art history, dogs have held a significant place in artistic representations, showcasing their enduring presence and deep connection with humanity. In ancient civilizations such as Egypt and Greece, dogs were depicted as companions of gods, guardians of the afterlife, and symbols of loyalty and protection. In Renaissance art, dogs often appeared alongside saints and noble figures, symbolizing fidelity and faithfulness.

During the Dutch Golden Age, dogs were featured in genre scenes, hunting scenes, and still-life paintings, showcasing their roles in everyday life and leisure activities. In the 19th century, dogs became popular subjects in sentimental Victorian art, representing domesticity, companionship, and childhood innocence.

The 20th century witnessed a variety of artistic interpretations of dogs, from the playful and whimsical depictions of Pablo Picasso to the poignant realism of William Wegman's photographic portraits. Dogs have been portrayed in diverse artistic styles and mediums, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, and even as subjects in contemporary installations and performance art.

Regardless of the artistic period or style, dogs in art evoke emotions, symbolize loyalty, and serve as beloved companions. Their presence in artworks transcends time and cultural boundaries, reminding us of the profound bond between humans and dogs throughout history.
